WHY OLIVE WOOD?

What is so special about olive wood? Olive wood is a rare hardwood that has been valued in the Mediterranean region for its natural beauty and durability for thousands of years. Its mesmerizing, marbled wood grain and contrasting earthen tones give it a striking appearance; each cut piece of olive wood is totally unique, and no two pieces are the same. We never tire of looking at it! When freshly cut, the wood provides a lovely, rich aroma of olives with a hint of dried figs, red wine, and overall fruitiness—yes, it does smell that good!

Wood from olive trees must be cured for several years before it can be processed. This, along with its slow growth rate, is what makes this unique wood so valuable. Olive trees can live to be 600+ years old, and their branches have been regarded as a symbol of peace for generations and have deep religious significance in both modern and ancient cultures. In fact, it was an olive tree that Jesus prayed under in the garden of Gethsemane (the word Gethsemane means “oil press”), and this same tree, or collection of trees, still exist in the Holy Land today (near the Mount Olives).

Olive wood also has antibacterial properties and small wood pores, making it well-suited for kitchen and food use, as odors and bacteria do not easily penetrate the wood. For this reason, it is considered more hygienic than other types of wood. If properly cared for, olive wood pieces can last a lifetime and are excellent for both decorative and practical use.
